Two Concord men arrested for fatal shooting over bicycle dispute

Two men have been arrested for the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man in a dispute over a bicycle in Concord earlier this month, police said Tuesday.

Jose Hernandez-Barajas, 21, and Luis Angel Mendoza, 19, both of Concord, were arrested in connection with the shooting of Carlos Nunez reported at about 1:45 a.m. on Feb. 10 in the area of Clayton Road and Detroit Avenue.

Investigators determined that Nunez, a Concord resident, contacted a group and asked if anyone wanted to purchase his bike, police said. Two members of the group claimed the bike was stolen and belonged to them, and they followed Nunez and shot and killed him, then stole the bike and other personal property from him, according to police.

Detectives found surveillance camera footage from a nearby apartment complex that showed the suspects a block from the murder scene. Hernandez-Barajas and Mendoza were arrested Friday on suspicion of killing Nunez. They both have been booked into county jail, police said.
