SF State shaken Monday by shooting, power outage and startling fireworks

Three unrelated incidents Monday night at and near San Francisco State University caused concern but at no time endangered students or faculty on campus, according to the school.

The most troubling of the three happened at about 7:40 p.m. when a woman was shot while inside a home on the first block of Serrano Drive, near 19th Avenue and just a block away from campus.

The woman, in her 20s, was shot in her upper torso and taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to San Francisco police.

Officers searched the surrounding area and did a sweep of the campus, but were unable to locate the suspect, described as a man in his 20s who is known by the victim.

University police reported that there was no active shooter or threat to the campus after the search.

Then, at about 11 p.m., a power outage plunged the campus into darkness “due to issues experienced by PG&E,” university officials reported. During the outage, someone shot off fireworks in the area, which some people mistook for gunshots associated with the earlier shooting.

“We recognize that these events caused confusion and concern,” SFSU spokeswoman Mary Kenny said in a statement Tuesday. “It is our practice to provide timely updates to the campus community in instances of imminent threat.”
