A man incarcerated for a 1982 murder was denied parole at a hearing Thursday, according to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office.
Vernon Bragg, 65, of Guerneville, pleaded guilty in 1985 to second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the shooting death of Ray Bragg in 1982.
On Thursday, Vernon Bragg, a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation inmate, was given a three-year denial of parole by the State of California Board of Parole Hearings.
In 1982, he lured Ray Bragg into a garage, beat him to the ground with a handgun and shot him in the back of the neck, according to the district attorney’s office.
Vernon Bragg then drove the victim’s body to an abandoned house in Duncan Mills and buried the body underneath the house.
The body was discovered two years later when one of Vernon Bragg’s associates provided a tip to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Vernon Bragg was on parole out of Texas for aggravated robbery at the time of the murder, and he was sentenced to 17 years to life in prison following his conviction. He has been incarcerated for 35 years. Several members of the victim’s family attended the hearing and spoke in opposition to Vernon Bragg’s parole, according to the district attorney’s office.
