Student engineers showcased at San Jose State expo

Projects like a warning system to detect imminent flooding are among ideas that will be unveiled by engineering students Monday evening during an exposition at San Jose State University.

The first-ever Engineering Projects in Community Service Expo is a collaboration between programs at San Jose State and Santa Clara University. Students from the schools will showcase products, prototypes and ideas designed to help the local Silicon Valley community, organizers said. Student-led projects on display will include a warning system to detect imminent flooding, an underwater drone to locate endangered species and pop-up smart lockers for homeless, according to organizers. Student teams will be awarded financial grants to help bring their projects to market. The grants are made possible through the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Foundation.

The expo, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Compean Student Union, Ballroom B on the San Jose State campus.

During the expo, students will network with corporate and non-profit representatives.

Speakers will include S.K. Ramesh, IEEE Fellow and Director of the AIMS Program at California State University Northridge; Jinny Rhee, Associate Dean of the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering at San Jose State; and Jon C. Strauss, Interim Dean at Santa Clara University School of Engineering.
