Two women in their 20s were attacked on San Francisco Municipal Railway buses or trains in separate assaults Thursday, and one of them had to be hospitalized, San Francisco police said Friday.
The first assault was reported around 12:45 p.m. near Mission and Norton streets. A 37-year-old woman kicked and punched a 23-year-old woman, sending her to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
The suspect was arrested.
At 2:50 p.m., a 28-year-old woman on Muni reported that a woman and man attacked her and stole her shoulder bag, purse, laptop, cellphone and ID near Market and Eighth streets. One of the suspects, a 25-year-old woman, was arrested, according to police.
Officer Robert Rueca, a police spokesman, said such incidents are bound to happen in a heavily trafficked public transit system like Muni:
“We have incidents occur on Muni. Some get reported and some result in arrests.”
Paul Rose, a spokesman for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, said overall, security incidents on Muni have been declining since 2014:
“When things like this occur, we work with the San Francisco Police Department to provide them with any information that we have to help make timely arrests.”
