Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to the intersection of Lakeville Street and Caulfield Lane on a report of someone lying on the sidewalk partially into the roadway.
Fire crews were already on scene attending to the woman, who was conscious and breathing but was unable to talk, police said. She did not appear to have any visible injuries or signs of trauma, but her condition deteriorated after being transported to Petaluma Valley Hospital and she passed away, according to police.
The Sonoma County coroner’s office is not yet releasing the woman’s name.
Petaluma police said nothing about the case appears to be suspicious, but they are asking anyone with information about it to contact Officer Sutherland at (707) 778-4372.
