Menlo Park extends fire protection into East Palo Alto

The Menlo Park Fire Protection District will hold two dedication ceremonies Monday, coinciding with expansion of services in East Palo Alto and the Menlo Park’s Belle Haven residential area.

The first ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Fire Station 2, at 2290 University Ave. in East Palo Alto. There, the department’s new Tillered Aerial Ladder Truck Company (Truck 2) will be dedicated.

Then at 3 p.m., the second ceremony will be held at Fire Station 77 at 1467 Chilco St. in the Belle Haven neighborhood. Dedication of the department’s new Light Rescue (Rescue Squad 77) will highlight this ceremony.

These two ceremonies happen the same day the Menlo Park Fire Protection District will begin operating four emergency first response units staffed by 12 personnel – a doubling of capability and the number of units and personnel needed to adequately maintain an effective and essential fire force in this fast-growing area, Chief Harold Schapelhouman said in a news release.

Moving more crews to those stations, Schapelhouman said, should help all parts of the district provide emergency service. It should stabilize crews assigned to the department’s Atherton, Menlo Park and unincorporated county Areas, that Schapelhouman said will likely see a decrease in emergency requests for response.
