Fairfield man struck by cars, killed on I-880

A Fairfield man was killed on northbound Interstate Highway 880 early Friday morning when several vehicles struck him, officials with the California Highway Patrol said.

Alejandro Diaz, 28, was on Highway 880 at 3:36 a.m. when the CHP started receiving calls about a pedestrian on the highway south of the South Fremont Boulevard exit.

CHP officials said shortly thereafter, dispatchers received multiple calls from people who said that several vehicles had struck the pedestrian and he was down in the traffic lanes.

CHP officers arrived and found the man dead in the lanes of traffic.

According to CHP officials, officers searched the area and did not find any associated vehicles. All lanes of northbound Highway 880 were closed from about 3:55 a.m. to about 5:30 a.m. and traffic was diverted off at South Fremont Boulevard.

CHP officials are investigating the collision and are asking the public for help identifying any vehicle that may have been involved in it. Anyone with more information is encouraged to call the CHP Hayward Area office at (510) 489-1500.
