San Jose mayor struck by car while bicycling

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo was injured Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle as he was cycling in his city, the mayor’s office said.

Liccardo was struck at about 12:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Salt Lake Drive.

The driver of the vehicle pulled over and stayed at the collision site while the mayor was taken to a hospital.

The mayor’s office said Liccardo suffered minor fractures, but the injuries are not too serious.

Liccardo will be kept at the hospital for at least one night for observation. He is in good spirits.

In a statement, the mayor said:

“I’d like to thank compassionate neighbors like Linda and Tom who rushed to help immediately after the accident; the fast and professional response from Fire Station 19 and the San Jose Police Department; the wonderful paramedic care from Alex and her team; and the outstanding medical attention from Dr. Jimenez and the entire staff at Regional Medical Center.”
