A San Jose-area girl died after apparently falling about 700 feet from an overlook in Arizona on Christmas Eve, sheriff’s officials in Coconino County said Wednesday.
The girl, whose name wasn’t released, was reported missing by her family at about 4 p.m. Christmas Eve because they hadn’t seen her in a couple of hours.
The sheriff’s office’s search and rescue unit and an air rescue unit from the Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the area to search for the child.
She was spotted at the bottom of Horseshoe Bend, about 700 feet below the overlook, according to the sheriff’s office.
Because it was about to get dark, rescuers were not able to get to her body that day.
Rescuers came back Christmas Day and recovered her body at about 10 a.m. She was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Sheriff’s officials said the family was visiting from the greater San Jose area.
The fall appears to have been an accident, but it’s still under investigation.
