Bicyclist killed on I-280 in San Jose identified

A bicyclist who died after being hit by a car Friday on Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose has been identified as 27-year-old Juan Perez Lopez, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Perez Lopez was seen by witnesses carrying a bike down the embankment to a freeway railing, lifting the bike over the railing and trying to ride the bike across the freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He was hit at 9:47 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 280 near the U.S. Highway 101 interchange, according to the CHP, and was thrown a significant distance. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perez Lopez did not have an established city of residence, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The driver who struck Perez Lopez stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

Impairment of the driver wasn’t a factor in the crash but whether the bicyclist was impaired remains under investigation, Lee said. CHP officials also don’t believe the weather was a factor.
