Witnesses report freeway racing before I-880 hit-and-run

At least one person suffered major injuries following a hit-and-run collision on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said the collision occurred on the freeway just north of Fruitvale Avenue around 4:06 a.m. According to the CHP, at least two vehicles were involved in the collision, but witnesses told the CHP that up to five vehicles may have been racing on the southbound freeway at the same time.
The freeway was momentarily shut down as the CHP cleared the collision.
