Stranded Highway 17 driver struck by suspected DUI driver

A pedestrian suffered major injuries after being hit by a suspected DUI driver in unincorporated Santa Cruz County early Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 29-year-old Fremont man had been attending to a flat tire on the shoulder of southbound state Highway 17 south of Mount Hermon Road at about 1:40 a.m. when he was struck by a 2004 Volkswagen Passat, CHP officials said.

Officers initially responded to a report of a man stranded on the side of the highway and arrived to find he had been hit.

The man was taken to Dominican Hospital and later Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with major injuries.

Lauro Navarro Jr., 41 of Watsonville, remained on scene after hitting the man, according to the CHP. He was later arrested on suspicion of a felony DUI.

The CHP is currently investigating the crash.
