One dead after wrong-way Hwy. 101 crash

A 68-year-old Gonzales man died in a suspected DUI crash involving four cars in unincorporated Monterey County on Monday evening, California Highway Patrol officials said today.

A man driving a Chevrolet Silverado the wrong way in a southbound lane of U.S. Highway 101 north of Spence Road crashed head-on with a Nissan Frontier traveling south at 7:34 p.m., according to the CHP.

Raymondo Navarro was driving the Nissan and died at the scene. The Chevrolet driver, 44-year-old Luciano Rojas Medina of Salinas, was taken to Natividad Medical Center for moderate injuries and arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the CHP.

A Honda Odyssey involved in the crash was hit on the right side and a BMW was hit in the front, according to the CHP.

The drivers and passengers of the two cars only had complaints of pain and refused medical transport, CHP officials said.

Medina is currently in police custody at the hospital and the CHP is investigating the crash.
