Old Bay Bridge demolition concludes Saturday

Caltrans will culminate the demolition work on the original east span of the Bay Bridge on Saturday when it implodes two marine foundations.

As with previous implosions, Caltrans said it will conduct environmental monitoring before, during and after each blast to evaluate any effects to water quality, marine mammals, fish and birds.

The California Highway Patrol will conduct rolling traffic closures lasting up to 30 minutes on Interstate Highway 80 eastbound and westbound approaching the Bay Bridge on the day of the implosion.

The Bay Bridge bicycle and pedestrian path has been closed through Saturday morning. It will reopen shortly after the implosion is complete.

Four remaining marine foundations will be repurposed for public access improvements, according to Caltrans. One pier along Yerba Buena Island will be converted into an observation platform and a 140-foot-long boardwalk, while three others on the Oakland shoreline will serve as the foundation for a 600-foot-long boardwalk.
