Driver arrested after fatal motorcycle collision

A woman died and a young man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a car collided with a motorcycle Tuesday morning in San Jose, police reported.

The collision happened at 7:35 a.m. on southbound McLaughlin Avenue at Panache Street where a blue Honda Accord traveling south attempted to make a U-turn onto northbound McLaughlin Avenue, according to police.

As the Honda’s driver attempted the turn across the left-most lane, a woman on 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle, also heading south on McLaughlin Avenue, hit the Honda’s driver’s side, police said.

According to police, the motorcyclist had been traveling in the left-most lane.

The motorcyclist suffered major injuries and died at a hospital shortly afterward. The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office will release her identity after contacting her family.

Daniel Douglas Tapia, the Honda driver, remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving without a valid driver’s license and booked into county jail.

Police said alcohol or drugs are not suspected as a cause of the collision, and the woman is the 31st victim of a fatal collision in San Jose this year.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Detective Kevin McMillin at (408) 277-4654.
