Emeryville police said the threat from a possible explosive device was eliminated following its discovery Tuesday afternoon in a storage room in a garage.
Someone reported the item to police at 2:10 p.m. after it was discovered at 6401 Shellmound St.
Police said a maintenance worker found the item, which was cylindrical and about 10 inches long.
Police officers looked at the item and were unable to say that it was not an explosive, so police asked for help from BART, which deployed explosive detection dogs, and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad.
The bomb squad used a controlled explosive to eliminate the threat from the item.
Police said they are asking for help from the public to find out what happened in the area before the item was discovered. Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department’s criminal investigations section at (510) 596-3700.
All roads in the area that were closed are open again. Police said the entire complex where the item was found was searched and nothing else suspicious was found.
