At least one person was injured following a freeway shooting on westbound Interstate Highway 80 in unincorporated Contra Costa County on Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Erica Tatum said the shooting was first reported at 6:18 p.m. Sunday and occurred somewhere along a 7.5-mile stretch of the westbound freeway between the Cummings Skyway and Appian Way.
Tatum said the CHP closed the freeway from 7:37 p.m. to 9:06 p.m. to search for evidence.
The highway’s westbound lanes were closed at Cummings Skyway near Crockett. Traffic was at first guided onto Cummings Skyway and then onto state Highway 4 and back to Interstate Highway 80; later, traffic was kept off of a longer stretch of the freeway, guided onto San Pablo Avenue all the way to Pinole.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, but the extent of their injuries wasn’t available, according to Tatum. It is unclear if the victim was shot or injured in a traffic collision as a result of the shooting.
No suspects were named in the shooting and it is currently under investigation, Tatum said.
