Bicyclist killed by van in Oakland collision

A 34-year-old bicyclist was killed in a collision with a van in East Oakland on Friday night, police said Monday.

A Chevrolet Express Limited van was traveling north on 35th Avenue at about 9 p.m. on Friday and when it entered the intersection with Galindo Street a bicyclist, later identified as Deontae Bush of Oakland, entered the roadway and was struck by the van, according to police.

Paramedics and Oakland firefighters responded to the scene to provide medical care to Bush but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The van’s driver, a 40-year-old Oakland man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

Authorities said it isn’t yet known if alcohol was a factor in the collision.

The fatal collision is still under investigation and Oakland police said anyone who has information about it should call their traffic investigation unit at (510) 777-8570.
