Vigil Monday night for victim of BART stabbing

An 18-year-old woman who was fatally stabbed at the MacArthur BART station on Sunday night was identified by Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Monday as Nia Wilson.

BART spokesman Jim Allison said a suspect described as a white man in his 20s or 30s with short hair and a heavy build allegedly attacked Wilson and another young woman at random as they departed a Warm Springs-bound train at the MacArthur station at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

SUSPECT IDENTIFIED BART officials have identified 27-year-old John Cowell as a suspect being sought after the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Nia Wilson.

The second woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries, according to Allison.

Mayor Schaaf said in a statement:

“The senseless and violent stabbing of two young women on a BART train platform last night has shaken our community. Every parent who saw the father of Nia Wilson grieve for his daughter is heartbroken by this horrific act.”

Schaaf said BART is the lead agency investigating the stabbing but Oakland police:

“… have been in constant contact with BART police, are already providing support on this investigation and have considerable resources available to further assist in identifying and apprehending the person or people responsible for this attack.”

The mayor said at this time authorities don’t know of a motive for the crime.

Schaaf said:

“We all mourn in this moment and we will all work together to bring justice for Nia.”

According to a posting on social media by the Anti Police-Terror Project and Community READY Corps, there will be a vigil for Wilson at the MacArthur BART station at 555 40th St. in Oakland from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday.
