One person was killed and another injured in a collision related to a police chase on state Highway 24 in Orinda Saturday morning that closed the highway for nearly six hours, law enforcement officials said.
But as of 3:09 p.m. all lanes of westbound Highway 24 were open again.
An Orinda police officer tried to pull a car over near St. Stephens Drive and Tahos Road around 9 a.m., according to sheriff’s officials. However, the car sped off, and the officer pursued.
The car got onto westbound Highway 24, sheriff’s officials said. The officer lost sight of the car, according to sheriff’s officials, but then found the overturned car on Highway 24 near the BART station.
The overturned car was engulfed in flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.
There were two people in the vehicle, and they were given first aid, sheriff’s officials said. The pair was taken to a hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead, according to sheriff’s officials.
The district attorney’s office, the sheriff’s office and the California Highway Patrol are investigating the incident. The officer-involved fatal incident protocol has been invoked, sheriff’s officials said.
