A man believed to be a transient was hit and killed by a truck Thursday afternoon at a metal recycling yard in San Jose, police and worker safety officials confirmed.
Police responded to the collision in the 1900 block of Monterey Highway at 2:24 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian being hit by a truck.
A man was walking through the parking lot pushing a shopping cart when he was hit by a dump truck, according to police. The victim fell to the ground and was run over by the truck.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The man who was driving the truck remained at the scene to speak with officers and drugs or alcohol were likely not involved in the fatality, according to police.
Officials from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health said they received an incident report, but they will not open an investigation because the fatality does not involve a worker and their employer.
The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office will release the man’s name once his next of kin are contacted.
Police said man is the 11th pedestrian to die in San Jose this year in vehicle collisions.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Kevin Pham at (408) 277-4645.
