An elderly man died after a vehicle struck him Tuesday morning where a pedestrian safety beacon had recently been installed in San Francisco’s Pine Lake Park neighborhood, police and a city supervisor said.
The collision occurred at 10:06 a.m. at 36th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard where Caltrans recently installed a High Intensity Activated Crosswalk System, or HAWK beacon, which is meant to make it safer for pedestrians to cross streets.
Supervisor Katy Tang, who reported the fatality on Facebook, said it’s unclear whether the crosswalk system was turned on when the man was struck.
Pedestrians and drivers can become more familiar with the crosswalk system by viewing an online video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-i42w0Xd-8.
