Nine displaced by overnight North Beach fire

At least 9 people were displaced due to a 3-alarm fire in North Beach early Tuesday morning, San Francisco Fire Department fire officials said.

The fire was first reported late Monday at 11:53 p.m. in the 1300 block of Columbus Avenue at a three-story, residential-over-commercial building, fire officials said. It was contained around 1:55 a.m.

Four adults in the building have been displaced and 1 firefighter suffered minor injuries. A family of five tourists staying in a nearby Airbnb were temporarily displaced due to the smell of smoke and relocated to a hotel for the night, Lt. Jonathan Baxter said.

The American Red Cross has been called to assist those who were displaced in the blaze. Baxter said San Francisco District 2 Supervisor Catherine Stefani was on the scene observing the blaze and helping those displaced.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and crews are expected to be on the scene throughout the morning, Baxter said.
