Berkeley burglar offers cocaine to victim

An alleged burglar attempted to sell his victim cocaine after the resident woke up to the early-morning crime in progress on June 27, according to Berkeley police.

The resident called police after a noise woke him up to find a stranger in his home in the 2700 block of Durant Avenue around 4:30 a.m.

The man said the suspect claimed to be trying to find a different address, and then offered to sell the victim cocaine and pulled a baggie of white powder out of his pocket – but the resident told the suspect to leave, according to police.

Officers found a suspect in the vicinity of Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue around 5:17 a.m.

They attempted to search him but the man allegedly attempted to flee. Police tackled and restrained him, and a subsequent search allegedly turned up more than a half-ounce of cocaine.

Jahcoby Dillon Adams-Mabin, a 24-year-old resident of Berkeley, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, threatening violence on a peace officer, felony battery on emergency personnel and possession of a controlled substance, according to police.

Adams-Mabin suffered a scrape to the forehead but was treated and released by medical personnel at the scene before being booked into jail.

One of the arresting officers suffered a laceration to the forehead and was treated at a hospital.
