A San Carlos man pleaded no contest Wednesday to misdemeanor animal neglect and drug possession after San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies searching his home found five dirty pit bulls, prosecutors said.
One of the dogs was allegedly separated from the others and left in a room with 3 inches of feces and urine when deputies conducted a probation search of the Brittan Avenue home of 37-year-old Javier Ian Larson on Aug. 13.
Larson had a prior case involving a dangerous pit bull who had bitten an elderly man, according to the district attorney’s office.
None of the dogs at the home had access to food or water, and they did not appear to be properly cared for, so they were taken into custody by the Peninsula Humane Society.
Nearly two weeks later, deputies searched Larson’s home again and found a sixth dog they had apparently missed during the previous search.
That one was locked in a kennel in the backyard, surrounded by feces and suffering from some kind of skin infection thought to be associated with fleas or mites.
Larson returns to court for sentencing on Oct. 12, at which time he faces up to two years in county jail. Meanwhile, he is out of custody on $10,000 bail.
Defense attorney Justin Goodwin could not immediately be reached for comment.
