Lane-splitting motorcyclist killed on I-580

A motorcyclist died Friday afternoon after being ejected from a bike on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 in unincorporated Alameda County, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The motorcyclist was driving at about 30 to 40 mph and splitting lanes at about 3:50 p.m. on Highway 580 near Flynn Road North when a Porsche switched lanes ahead of the motorcyclist, Officer Tyler Hahn said.

The motorcyclist locked up the brakes, lost control of the bike and sideswiped the Porsche.

The motorcyclist was ejected from the bike and hit the rear of a Honda Accord.

A rescue helicopter was called out but the motorcyclist died at the scene, Hahn said. Eastbound Highway 580 was closed for about 30 minutes to allow the helicopter to land.

Congestion on Highway 580 caused some motorists to use Patterson Pass Road, which was closed this evening because of a vegetation fire, according to the Alameda County Fire Department. The fire was contained to 5.7 acres.
