An investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Union City on Monday is leading to road closures and public transit issues Tuesday morning, according to police and transit officials.
Police said Whipple Road between Railroad Avenue and Ithaca Street will be closed for at least four to six hours as police investigate the officer-involved shooting that sent one person to the hospital and resulted in two arrests. Also closed is a largely residential area of E Street between 9th and 10th streets, police said.
In addition, Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor trains have either been delayed or canceled stops at the Hayward station due to the police investigation. Train 521 was delayed and Train 524 won’t stop at the station, according to Amtrak officials.
Police said an officer attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of E Street and Railroad Avenue around 11:35 p.m. Monday. As the officer attempted to make contact with the vehicle, shots were fired between the occupants in the vehicle and the officer, according to police.
The vehicle fled from the scene, according to police, but stopped a short distance away at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Whipple Road, where the three suspects inside the vehicle ran into the surrounding neighborhoods.
Police said all three suspects were eventually detained and arrested. One suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital.
No officers were injured in the shooting, which is currently under investigation, police said.
