Van Ness gas leak capped, evacuation lifted

The gas leak that caused evacuations in the vicinity of Filbert Street and Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco has been stopped and the evacuation order has been lifted, utility and fire officials said.

Around 9:30 a.m., PG&E was contacted regarding a gas incident on Van Ness near Filbert, according to utility spokeswoman Andrea Menniti.

“When we arrived, we determined that a construction crew unrelated to PG&E that was digging in the area hit a two-inch gas main,” Menniti said. “Our crews stopped the gas leak around 10:30 a.m.”

After the gas leak was reported, around 10 a.m., an evacuation and shelter in place order was issued for the 2500 and 2600 blocks of Van Ness Avenue and the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Filbert Street, fire officials said.

The evacuations were precautionary and were lifted at 11:15 a.m., San Francisco Fire Lt. Jonathan Baxter said.
