Canoer found dead in Berkeley Marina ID’d

A man who died after his canoe overturned in the Berkeley marina on Saturday evening was identified by the Alameda County coroner Monday as 38-year-old Christopher Cheung of Walnut Creek.

Authorities found Cheung’s body in the Berkeley Marina near Cesar Chavez Park shortly after a bystander reported seeing an empty canoe floating in the marina’s water at about 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Rachel Thomas said.

Coast Guard officials don’t think anyone else was in the canoe with Cheung when it overturned, according to Thomas.

Cheung’s exact cause of death and what caused the canoe to overturn haven’t yet been determined, authorities said.
