Breed maintains lead with 17,000 ballots left to count

San Francisco Board of Supervisors President maintained her lead over former state Sen. Mark Leno on Monday afternoon in race to become The City’s next mayor.

Breed leads Leno by 1,601 votes, a slight increase from Sunday of 1,580 votes, according to the latest figures from the Department of Elections.

The department counted approximately 9,000 ballots since the last update on Sunday.

The number of ballots the department still needs to process is dwindling.

John Arntz, director of the Department of Elections, said the department still needs to process 17,000 ballots, 14,000 of which are provisional ballots.

The department began opening the provisional ballots but will not start counting until Tuesday.

Tara Moriarty, Breed’s campaign spokesperson, said in a press release on Monday that it remains unclear who will be winner until all the votes are tallied:

“Whether Breed’s dominant showing will be enough to secure the win in RCV won’t be known until all the votes are counted.”

The department will make another update on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
