San Francisco mayoral candidate and President of the Board of Supervisors London Breed continues to gain traction in the mayor’s race.
On the fourth day of counting ballots, state Sen. Mark Leno’s lead shrank yet again. Leno now only leads Breed by 144 votes, according to the latest figures by the Department of Elections.
Early Wednesday morning, Leno had a 1,121 lead against Breed. On Thursday afternoon, Leno had led Breed by 255 votes.
The department continues to count more vote-by-mail ballots delivered from the post office and from polling places.
The Department of Elections said it counted 6,000 vote-by-mail ballots from the post office and 13,000 ballots dropped off at polling places in Friday’s update.
The department still has approximately 64,900 ballots to count and will work through the weekend.
John Arntz, director of the Department of Elections, said staff will work from 8 a.m. 10 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday or until 10 p.m. if needed.
There are still about 14,000 provisional ballots that the department still needs to open but will most likely not look at those until next week, said Arntz.
The department hopes to complete processing the vote-by-mail ballots by the early next week, said Arntz.
