Oakley man arrested after crash injures four

A 27-year-old Oakley man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after a crash in Antioch Wednesday morning that sent him and four other people to hospitals, including a 5-year-old boy who had to be taken there by a helicopter, police said.

Officers responded at 8:14 a.m. to the crash on East 18th Street near Viera Avenue and learned that the man, whose name was not immediately available, was speeding east and rear-ended a SUV that had just pulled from northbound Viera onto eastbound East 18th, police said.

The SUV overturned several times as a result of the crash and struck another vehicle.

Two women, ages 52 and 30, in the SUV were taken to a hospital for complaints of pain, while the 5-year-old boy and his 32-year-old female guardian were airlifted to the hospital, also for complaints of pain, according to police.

The 27-year-old man was also hospitalized for precautionary measures and police said he would be arrested on suspicion of DUI after being medically cleared.
