According to NBCS reporter Alex Pavlovic the Giants have reported that first baseman Brandon Belt had an appendectomy late Friday night and he is expected to be discharged some time Saturday.
Belt posted a photo on Twitter of himself hospitalized wearing a bouffant-style surgical cap early Saturday morning.
He was pulled after the first inning of Friday’s game for signs of gastrointestinal illness, and the Giants later announced that he had been rushed to the hospital and was being evaluated for appendicitis.
Though he did not confirm a diagnosis of appendicitis Friday night, Bruce Bochy did indicate that Belt’s illness would have repercussions for the roster.
He said:
“[If] he does have appendicitis, that changes things quite a bit, so we’ll wait and see what the news we get from the hospital [is].”
Bochy said the they expect to announce further information Saturday.
According to the Mayo Clinic, an appendectomy is a relatively simple procedure with modern medicine and is often even performed on an outpatient basis. Patients can typically resume strenuous activities, including sports, within two to four weeks barring any major complications.
Belt currently leads the team in home runs (11), runs (32), OPS (.950), and is tied with Evan Longoria for the team’s most RBI (31). His OPS is the fourth best in the national league.

The Giants will play game two of a three game series with the Phillies Saturday. Pitching probables are southpaw Andrew Suárez (1-4, 5.65) and righty Vince Velasquez (4-5, 4.08). First pitch is set 7:05 p.m. and the Giants are giving away retro orange fanny packs to the first 20,000 fans, which is as good a reason as any to head out to the yard.
