Wind drives fires near Alameda-CoCo border

The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District is responding to roughly seven wind-driven wildfires Wednesday afternoon in the Byron area of unincorporated Contra Costa County near the Alameda County line.

The fires were first reported around 1 p.m., and are burning in the area between Camino Diablo and the county line, Battalion Chief Ross Macumber said.

Winds in the area are estimated at 20 to 30 mph, according to Macumber.

Early reports indicate that one of the fires might be as large as 40 acres, but it’s too soon for an accurate estimate. There were at least some structures threatened by the fire, but it’s unclear whether any have been damaged.

Macumber said more information would be available later this afternoon.
