San Benancio man dies in Monterey Co. crash

A man who died in a solo vehicle crash on Sunday night in unincorporated Monterey County was identified as 60-year-old Lawrence Robert Carroll of San Benancio.

Impairment is believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At 8:46 p.m., a white Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south on San Benancio Road just north of Harper Canyon Road, CHP officers said.

The driver of the Chevrolet failed to adjust for a curve in the roadway and struck a power pole on the east side of San Benancio Road, causing two power poles to fall to the ground and block the road, according to the CHP.

The Chevrolet continued out of control on southbound San Benancio Road and struck a large tree, where it came to rest.

CHP officers said the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

San Benancio Road was closed for an extended time for an investigation and restoration of damaged PG&E and AT&T property.
