Oakland man killed during home robbery

A man who was fatally shot during a home invasion robbery in East Oakland last week was identified by police Tuesday as 51-year-old Hoan Lieu of Oakland.

Officers who responded to a report of a home invasion robbery in the 4100 block of Carrington Street at 9:43 p.m. on May 22 found Lieu suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No arrests have been made and police have not released any suspect information.

Lieu’s brother Chris Lieu has sent up a GoFundMe website to support Lieu’s family and as of this afternoon it has raised more than $19,000 of its $100,000 goal. The website is at https://www.gofundme.com/7mo-pregnant-snl-kat-lost-husband.

Chris Lieu wrote on the site that his brother, who he said was known as “Harry” to his friends, was single for a long time but finally got married to a woman named Kat several years ago and she is expecting a baby boy to be named Benjamin to be born in August.

Lieu wrote:

“Unfortunately, Harry won’t be able to see his baby boy come into this world, feel Benjamin’s gentle tiny hand wrapped around his finger or suffer the sleepless nights that all proud, loving fathers do.”

Lieu wrote that when he learned of his brother’s death:

“My heart sank. It was gut-wrenching to come to the realization that Harry died, my sister-in-law is now a widow and my nephew will be born without a father.”

Lieu said a detective told him that “my brother gave his life to protect Kat and their unborn baby from would-be robbers.”

He wrote:

“Kat and Benjamin are unharmed because of him. Harry died a hero … My brother was the primary provider for his family and now he is gone. Kat and Benjamin are in need of financial assistance.”
