Two arrested in Sunday San Jose shooting

Two men in their 20s are in custody after police linked them to a shooting that killed one suspect’s father and seriously injured his mother in San Jose on Sunday evening, according to police.

Duong Luu, 25, and Madison Muong, 27, were arrested on Tuesday at their residence in San Jose in connection with the homicide of Luu’s father, Thao Quoc Luu, 70, and the attempted murder of his mother.

At 7:38 p.m. Sunday, San Jose police officers responded to the 2600 block of Senter Road on a report of a person shot, police said. When they arrived, police found two victims suffering from at least one gunshot each.

Luu was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife was transported to a hospital with injuries believed to be life-threatening.

A candlelight vigil is being held on Friday evening at the Spanish Cove Mobile Home Park, located in the block where Luu and his wife were shot, beginning at 6:45 p.m. with a religious prayer ceremony and continuing at 7 p.m. with brief remarks.

District 7 councilman Tam Nguyen and San Jose police Capt. Johnson Fong are expected to speak to community members in attendance.

Nguyen’s chief of staff Louansee Moua sent out a statement about the ceremony that identified the second victim as Duong Luu’s mother.

Tam Nguyen said in the statement that the community was mourning the loss of the volunteer Taichi instructor at the local Vietnamese American Community Center.

Nguyen said:

“Teacher Thao Luu, a devout Buddhist, dedicated his life to help others and do good for the community … He is deeply admired by friends, students and everybody who knows him. He will be missed dearly.”

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call Detective Sgt. John Barg or Detective Raul Corral of the department’s Homicide Unit at (408) 277-5283.

Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the Crime Stoppers tip line at (408) 947-STOP or click the “Submit A Tip” link at the bottom of the San Jose Police Department’s website.
