The California Highway Patrol has identified a 21-year-old man arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana after a crash killed a woman, a young adult in their teens and a child on northbound Interstate Highway 880 in Fremont on Tuesday night.
Dang Nguyen Hai Tran, a San Jose resident, was arrested following the five-car crash that occurred around 9:30 p.m. near Stevenson Boulevard, according to the CHP.
The three people who died had been ejected from a Cadillac Escalade, while another five — including four juveniles — were also injured in the crash.
Tran was driving a Toyota Camry and was reported to be driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed prior to the collision, CHP Officer Manuel Leal said.
The crash shut down all northbound lanes of Highway 880 in the area for several hours, but all lanes reopened by about 6:20 a.m., according to the CHP.
CHP officials said additional details about the crash will be released following further investigation by officers from the agency’s Hayward office as well as its Golden Gate Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
