Oakland International Airport has been chosen by Southwest Airlines as one of the first U.S. Mainland airports to begin Southwest’s nonstop service to Hawaii, officials with the Port of Oakland, which manages the airport, said.
Other airports in California that have been chosen to provide non-stop service to Hawaii are San Jose, San Diego and Sacramento, according to Southwest Airlines.
The new service will begin if the Southwest gets authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Southwest previously announced that it plans to fly into four Hawaiian airports. They are Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Kahului Airport on Maui, Lihue Airport on Kauai and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole on the leeward side of The Island of Hawaii.
Southwest Airlines’ president Tom Nealon said the company is on track to start selling tickets this year pending regulatory approval.
