Ambulance versus Audi crash injures 5

Five people were injured in a crash involving an ambulance in San Lorenzo Monday morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash happened at 11:12 a.m. at the intersection of Hesperian and Lewelling boulevards, according to Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

The Paramedics Plus ambulance was headed south on Hesperian with a patient in the back, CHP spokesman Officer Dan Jacowitz said. He did not know if the ambulance was driving with its lights and sirens activated.

The driver of a white Audi sedan was headed east on Lewelling and slammed into the side of the ambulance when it was in the intersection, tipping it on its left side, Jacowitz said.

The patient in the back of the ambulance suffered major injuries and the Audi driver suffered moderate to major injuries, Jacowitz said. Three emergency workers in the ambulance were also injured and Jacowitz did not immediately know their condition.

All five patients were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. CHP is investigating the crash with the assistance of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
