Panik, Williamson hit DL, Giants recall Alen Hanson

The Giants have been bitten by the injury bug again, and Saturday they made a few roster adjustments to fill the new holes in their lineup.

Joe Panik was placed on the 10-day disabled list after spraining his left thumb tagging Yasiel Puig in Friday’s 6-4 Giants win.

Manager Bruce Bochy said of Panik’s injury:

“He [had] an MRI and he’s gonna get with the doctors, so I can give a little bit more (information) once they let us know exactly what’s going on, but we do know he’s not gonna play for at least the next 10 days. He got through [the game last night], but this morning it was really sore.”

In other news, Mac Williamson, who was called up last Friday and got off to a red-hot start, was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list. 

Said Bochy:

“We’re hoping it’s just the seven days. He felt fine yesterday — zero symptoms. There was a test last night that he had to retake this morning and after taking the test it was determined he needed to be placed on the concussion disabled list when he got a little lightheaded this morning.”

Utility-man Alen Hanson has been called up from Triple-A Sacramento to fill in at second base. Hanson is hitting .403 in 62 at bats for the River Cats this season with five doubles and three home runs.

Austin Slater was recalled from Triple-A Friday when Chris Stratton went on the paternity list and he was originally slated to go back to Sacramento with Stratton’s return, but he will now remain in San Francisco to fill in.

Hanson, a former Pirate, has logged big league games at second base, third base shortstop and all three outfield positions, so he could be called upon to help fill the void in left field along with Slater.

Slater will start game one of Saturday’s doubleheader in left field but Bochy plans to mix it up and said he will generally “go with the hot bat.”

Of the blow to his roster, and temporary losses of Panik (.267/.323/.389 slash) and Williamson (three home runs and six RBIs in five games with the Giants), Bochy said:

“I just hate to see either one of ‘em get hurt at this point because really both of them are playing such good baseball. This is one that we’re gonna have to weather and push on.”

Closer Mark Melancon was also placed on the 60-day DL Saturday with continued issues stemming from pronator syndrome, which he’s been suffering from since last season.
