The San Francisco 49ers have traded offensive tackle Trent Brown to the New England Patriots, according to Adam Schefter and Field Yates of ESPN.
In addition to Brown, San Francisco will send the No. 143 pick to New England in exchange for the Patriot’s No. 95 overall pick (third round).
On Thursday night, San Francisco selected Notre Dame offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey with the No. 9 overall pick provoking an onslaught of speculation as to how expendable Brown has become.
49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan did not shy away from the possibility of moving Brown when asked following the first round of the draft.
Said Lynch regarding the topic:
”You never say never.”
By moving Brown, the 49ers have tipped their hand as to how they want to approach the issue of right tackle come training camp: The job looks to be McGlinchey’s to lose.
Now with another third-round pick at their disposal, expect Lynch and company to be active Friday evening.
