Raiders trade back to 15, take UCLA OT Kolton Miller

With their variety of glaring needs, the Raiders traded the No. 10 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft to Arizona. In return, Oakland received the 15th pick as well as the Cardinals’ third- and fifth-round selections, to help protect franchise quarterback Derek Carr.

Carr, of course, had his season take a sharp turn after suffering a spinal fracture in a Week 4 loss at the Denver Broncos.

Oakland pass protection finished the 2017-18 season tied for third-fewest in sacks allowed letting the opposition bring down their passer 24 times. But starting left tackle Donald Penn is 34 and expectant right tackle Vadal Alexander had played just 24 games (nine starts) in his two seasons in the NFL. Miller could Alexander for a starting spot while biding his time before seizing the left tackle spot for Penn.

Miller posted a nearly unfathomable 4.95-second 40-yard dash time — again, he is 6-foot-9 and 300 pounds — while his 24 bench press reps were second among the top-five tackles in the draft (Connor Williams, 26). He was the second-highest graded tackle, according to NFL.com, behind only Mike Mcglinchey, who was selected ninth overall by the 49ers.
