An Oakland man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and other offenses for allegedly violently assaulting a woman as he was robbing her near the San Leandro BART station Wednesday morning, police said.
The victim was walking with her purse on her shoulder on West Juana Avenue at about 7:30 a.m. when the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Sherrod Spurgeon, approached her and attempted to snatch her purse from her shoulder, according to police.
The force that Spurgeon used to try to take the woman’s purse knocked her to the ground and he proceeded to kick her until the purse strap broke, police said.
Several citizens witnessed the offense and called police but Spurgeon allegedly fled the area on foot with the victim’s purse in hand.
Officers who responded to the assault and robbery were able to corner Spurgeon in the neighborhood and eventually located him as he tried to flee again, police said.
Spurgeon was taken into custody and the woman’s purse was allegedly recovered.
The woman suffered minor injuries from the assault and robbery and was treated at the scene, police said.
Spurgeon is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of $105,000 bail and tentatively is scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court on Friday afternoon.
