Santa Cruz County will accept tires at no cost under an amnesty program to reduce environmental impacts of illegal dumping and the spread of infectious diseases, according to county officials.
From Saturday through April 21, residents can bring a maximum of five tires per day with fees waved on passenger car and light truck tires under 36 inches in diameter. Tires on rims will be accepted.
Waste tires from businesses will not be permitted, according to the county.
Tires will be picked up at four locations: Santa Cruz County Buena Vista Landfill, located at 1231 Buena Vista Drive in Watsonville, Santa Cruz County Ben Lomond Transfer Station, located at 9835 Newell Creek Road in Ben Lomond, the city’s Santa Cruz Resource Recovery Facility at 605 Dimeo Lane in Santa Cruz for residents only, and the Watsonville Waste and Recycling Drop Off, located at 320 Harvest Drive for residents only.
Hours of collection are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, county officials said.
The Santa Cruz County Department of Public Works, Santa Cruz County Mosquito and Vector Control, and the cities of Santa Cruz and Watsonville put the program together.
The program was funded by a state grant from CalRecycle to reduce soil contamination, mosquito breeding sites and fire hazards resulting from failure to correctly dispose of or store tires.
