The Giants have been quietly pushing Johnny Cueto‘s start back for several days now.
But ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Diamondbacks, which he was originally scheduled to start, the team placed him on the 10-day disabled list after manager Bruce Bochy revealed that the shimmying right-hander sustained a left ankle injury during a workout last week that continues to nag.
Bochy said of Cueto (1-0, 0.69 ERA):
“He tweaked it to the point where it’s coming ‘round a little slower than we thought. He threw today off the mound around 70 percent, but, you know, there’s still a little hesitation there, and between going full-go game-speed, you know, fielding bunts, things like that, we just felt that was a little risky.”
Rookie Tyler Beede will make his Major League debut Tuesday in Cueto’s stead, and Bochy said that Andrew Suarez is likely to make his big league debut in a start Wednesday. Steven Okert will take Cueto’s spot on the roster and will be available in Tuesday night’s game from the bullpen.
Cueto joins pitchers Madison Bumgarner (fractured left pinky), Jeff Samardzija (right pectoral strain), Mark Melancon (right elbow flexor strain) and Julian Fernandez (Tommy John) on the disabled list.
