The A’s announced a pair of roster moves shortly before taking on the Texas Rangers on getaway day, claiming Trayce Thompson off waivers from the New York Yankees and moving pitcher Paul Blackburn from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
Thompson, younger brother of the Golden State Warriors’ Klay, has played in 151 career games across three seasons with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. Thompson spent Spring Training with the Dodgers before the Yankees placed a waiver claim on him on Tuesday.
The Yankees then waived the outfielder Thursday morning, allowing the A’s to add him. Manager Bob Melvin called the idea of the Thompson brothers playing across the plaza from each other “pretty cool:”
“I talked to him just a little bit before I came out here and he’s really excited. He’s actually in [Los Angeles] right now at his parents’ house so it’ll work out well. We will see him in Anaheim and I think everybody’s pretty excited about that, not just us on the team.”
Thompson, a career .233/.310/.445 hitter, will join the team in Anaheim when the A’s start a three-game series against the Angels Friday but Melvin said the team isn’t certain yet what his role will be. The A’s have three off days over the next 11 games, so more roster moves could follow if the A’s decide to use only four starters.
To add Thompson to the 40-man roster, the A’s moved Blackburn to the 60-day disabled list.
Blackburn has dealt with forearm soreness since the end of Spring Training and an MRI Tuesday showed the injury hadn’t made as much progress as hoped. Blackburn won’t see game action until late May at the earliest and allows Daniel Gossett and Andrew Triggs to keep their rotation spots for the time being.
