Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced Monday that outfielder Jarrett Parker has been designated for assignment to make room for lefty Derek Holland, officially making him the third starter.
The devastation wrought on the Giants’ rotation last week has created an unexpected vacuum. Both Madison Bumgarner (fractured fifth metacarpal of his left hand) and Jeff Samardzija (strained right pectoral muscle) are out, set to miss 6 to 8 weeks and 4 to 6 weeks respectively, Holland now has the opportunity to bounce back from a less-than-sterling 2017 season with the Chicago White Sox (7-14, 6.20 ERA, 1.711 WHIP).
Parker has spent the past three seasons yo-yoing between the Giants big league club and its minor league affiliates. An April 2017 collision with the left field wall resulted in a fractured right clavicle that seemed to mitigate any momentum he had toward finally hitting his stride in the big leagues.
He had a less-than-promising start in the Cactus League this spring (9-for-21, .220) and with the level of competition for spots in the Giants 2018 outfield from players like Steven Duggar, Grégor Blanco and Gorkys Hernández, he would’ve needed to make a significant push to make the roster.
If Parker is not claimed by another team he will be given the option to play for Triple-A Sacramento or be granted outright release.
Holland will start Saturday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
