The Giants announced Monday that former manager Dusty Baker will return to the organization as special adviser to CEO Larry Baer and Director of Baseball Operations Brian Sabean.
His tasks will be geared toward observing and offering feedback on Giants players and their minor-league counterparts.
Baker managed in San Francisco from 1993 to 2002 and was voted Manager of the Year three times during his tenure. He has the second-most wins as a Giants manager in the San Francisco era, behind current skipper Bruce Bochy, and led the black and orange to Division Titles in 1997 and 2000. In 2002, Baker managed the Giants to a National League Pennant but lost the World Series to the Anaheim Angels in seven games, after which the Giants did not renew his contract.
He went on to manage for the Chicago Cubs from 2003 to 2006 and the Cincinnati Reds from 2008 to 2013. Most recently he led the Washington Nationals to an NL Pennant in 2016, but after losing the NLDS to the Cubs last season, the Nats let him go.
Baker, 68, is a Sacramento native and his son Darren plays baseball at UC Berkeley.
